Little library / thoughtful gifts

A small book.
A lovely moment.

Choose first books by format, readable pages and shared use, and give practical baby gifts with parents’ preferences in mind.

Planning guide · Reviewed 7 October 2026

Choose for shared use

A first book is something an adult and baby can explore together. Look at the page format, size and how comfortably you can hold it. Board books can be convenient for frequent handling, but check the actual edition rather than assuming every listing is the same. If you can preview the pages, do so; the cover tells only a small part of the story.

Check language and edition

Gift searches can return different languages, mini editions and boxed sets. Read the description carefully and compare dimensions, page count and format. Ask which languages the family uses and whether they already have the title. A single thoughtfully chosen book can be more useful than a large collection that duplicates what is already on the shelf.

Keep the gift easy to enjoy

Make the gift simple to open and store. Include a gift receipt if possible and avoid a bulky presentation box that leaves the parents with extra clutter. A short handwritten message can make an ordinary book feel personal. If you want to add clothing, confirm size and season first rather than filling a basket with newborn outfits.

Respect the parents’ preferences

Ask before giving larger equipment or items that affect feeding, travel or sleep. Those choices may involve compatibility, safety and personal routines. Don’t buy something simply because it is promoted as an essential. If a practical gift is requested, confirm the exact specification; otherwise, a modest book or an offer of help is a sensible place to begin.

Keep reading and play things out of the cot

Store books and gifts on a shelf or in a container away from the sleep space. Read and explore them together in an appropriate setting, following the product’s age guidance. For cot setup, follow current NHS safer-sleep advice. A nice book does not need to become part of a staged nursery photograph to be a useful gift.
