The stage-by-stage guide

Right for now.
Room for later.

Choose the stage you’re shopping for. This is a practical buying organiser, not a developmental checklist or a prescription to buy more.

01

Before birth

Plan the space, not the whole year.

Do now

Check your sleep setup, journey home and first changing area. Measure before you order larger items.

A small useful start

Everyday clothes, changing supplies, towels and correctly sized fitted sheets.

Can usually wait

A full next-size wardrobe, elaborate toy storage and multiple versions of the same accessory.

Make a note of the decisions you need help with, especially feeding, transport and sleep. Your care team can help with individual needs.

02

0–3 months

Find your everyday rhythm.

Notice the routine

Which clothes wash well? Where do used cloths pile up? What do you reach for on an ordinary outing?

A useful top-up

Buy replacements or extras for supplies you actually use, once you know fit and washing frequency.

Can usually wait

Duplicate bags, big gift hampers and specialist gadgets with no clear job in your routine.

Use your baby’s measurements and each manufacturer’s suitability guidance. An age label is a starting point, not a guarantee of fit.

03

3–6 months

More room to look, reach and play.

Review the space

Look at where shared reading and supervised play happen. Make sure supplies fit your room and can be tidied away.

Consider if useful

A washable floor-play mat, sturdy books and the next clothing size when needed.

Can usually wait

A big collection of toys bought just to match an age bracket. One practical choice can be enough.

This is a shopping organiser, not a milestone timetable. Babies vary; ask your health visitor if you have concerns about development.

04

6–12 months

Adapt to the baby in front of you.

Review what has changed

Recheck clothing fit, equipment limits and your home as your baby’s abilities change.

Replace with purpose

Choose items for a real need: larger clothes, more durable books or storage that fits your current routine.

Decide with guidance

Feeding and home-safety needs require current guidance and product instructions, not a generic shopping bundle.

Follow actual abilities, size and product limits rather than buying equipment because a calendar says it is time. This page does not prescribe feeding or development steps.
